Can I type on a PDF on a Chromebook?

Gallery only lets you type inside form fields the PDF already has. To place text anywhere on the page, for instance to fill in a scanned form or add a note, use the browser editor's Text tool, which writes the text into the page itself.

Does the Chromebook PDF editor need an extension?

No. It is a web page that runs in Chrome. Nothing is installed and no permissions are requested, which is also why it usually works on managed school and work devices where extensions are locked down.

Why is Annotate missing in Gallery?

The annotation tools arrived in ChromeOS in 2022. If your Chromebook is on an older release, or is a model that has reached its update expiry, Gallery opens PDFs read-only. The browser editor does not depend on the ChromeOS version.

Is my PDF uploaded to Google when I edit it in the browser?

No. The editor runs inside the Chrome tab on the device. The file is read from the Files app, edited locally, and downloaded; it is not sent to Drive or any server unless you save it there yourself afterwards.

How to edit a PDF on a Chromebook

On a Chromebook, PDFs open in the Gallery app, which has grown a real annotation toolbar: pen, highlighter, form filling and a drawn signature. For adding text anywhere, images or shapes, a browser editor is the next step, and it needs no extension.

Double-click the PDF in the Files app; it opens in Gallery.

Click Annotate in the top bar to get the pen, highlighter and eraser. Click into a form field to type in it.

Use the signature tool to draw a signature and place it.

Click Save (or Save as to keep the original). Gallery writes the file back to the same folder.

Where it falls short

No free-standing text tool: typing only works inside existing form fields.
No shapes, no images, and existing text cannot be changed.
Older ChromeOS versions lack the annotation toolbar entirely.
