Transparency is flattened onto white
This is the one thing worth knowing before you convert. PNG supports transparency; a PDF page does not have a background of its own. Placing a transparent image directly onto a page leaves those regions undefined, and different viewers resolve them differently — some render white, some black, some show whatever is behind.
Rather than let that happen, every page is painted white before the image goes down. Transparent areas come out white, consistently, in every viewer and on paper. If your PNG has a transparent background and you need it to stay that way, a PDF is not the right container.
PNG makes large PDFs
PNG is lossless, so a screenshot or diagram embeds at full fidelity — exactly what you want for text and line art. The trade-off is size: a folder of PNG photographs can produce a PDF several times larger than the same photographs as JPGs.
If the result is too big to email, run it through Compress PDF, which re-encodes the embedded images. For photographs specifically, converting to JPG first will give a smaller file than compressing afterwards.
