Why PNG for documents
PNG compression is lossless — every pixel comes out exactly as it was rendered. For a page of black text on white, that is the difference between crisp letter edges and the faint grey halo JPEG leaves around them.
That matters most when something else has to read the image afterwards. OCR accuracy drops measurably on JPEG artefacts, so if the plan is to recognise text later, or to crop into a diagram, PNG is the format that keeps your options open.
The cost is size. On a photographic page PNG can be several times larger than the equivalent JPG, because lossless compression has very little to remove from continuous tone. For scans and photographs, use PDF to JPG instead.
Resolution and file size
Doubling the DPI quadruples the pixel count, and roughly quadruples the output. 150 DPI is the right default for anything you will look at on a screen; go to 300 DPI when the image will be printed at full size or examined closely.
Very large pages at 300 DPI can exceed the maximum image a browser will allocate. Rather than fail, the tool renders at the highest resolution it can and carries on.
