What “editing” a PDF really means

A PDF is not a document format in the way a Word file is. It describes a finished page — these glyphs, at these coordinates, in this font — rather than paragraphs and headings that reflow. There is no underlying structure to edit, which is why no tool lets you retype a sentence and have the rest of the paragraph move up.

What every PDF editor actually does, including expensive ones, is draw new content on top. This tool is honest about that: you add text, shapes, drawings and images, and they become part of the page.

If you need to genuinely rewrite the text, convert to Word first, edit there, and convert back. Expect the layout to shift — that round trip is lossy by nature.

Covering is not removing

This matters enough to be blunt about. Drawing a filled box over a name hides it from view and nothing more. The original text is still in the file, still selectable, still extractable with any command-line tool. Anyone can also delete the box you drew.

If information has to be gone rather than hidden, use Redact PDF, which rebuilds the affected page so the content underneath no longer exists.

Once you save, it is a document again

Everything you place is drawn into the page when you save. Reopening the file gives you a finished PDF, not a project you can carry on editing — the text boxes are now just text on a page, like the rest of it.

That is a property of the format rather than a decision we made, but it has a practical consequence worth planning around: do all your edits in one sitting, and keep the original if you might need to change something later.
