How to compress a PDF on Android
Neither Google Files nor Google Drive can reduce the size of a PDF you already have; Drive's scanner makes new PDFs but does not compress old ones. On Android the shortest route is a browser tool in Chrome, with no app to install.
Is there a built-in way on Android?
No. Android has nothing built in for this, and the closest things get in the way:
- Google Files can open, share and delete PDFs, and the Drive app can scan paper into a new PDF, but neither has a compress or reduce-size option for an existing file.
- Chrome's Print → Save as PDF re-renders the file without resampling images, so the size rarely changes.
What that means
- No native compression on Android.
- Manufacturer file managers (Samsung My Files, for example) do not add one either.
Do it in the browser instead
The same Compress PDF tool as the main page, running in Chrome on Android. Nothing is installed and the file is processed on your device.

Choose the PDF
Open the tool in Chrome, tap Choose file, and pick the document from your phone's file picker or Drive.

Pick a mode
Rebuild keeps the text; Flatten to images shrinks scans and camera captures most.
- 03
Download the result
Tap Compress PDF, then Download. Chrome saves the file to your Downloads folder, where Files and Drive can see it.
