How to convert a PDF to Word on a Mac
A Mac ships nothing that turns a PDF into a Word document: Preview copies text, Pages will not open a PDF at all, and Word for Mac converts only if you pay for it. The browser tool extracts the text, paragraphs and headings into a .docx for free, and is honest about the layout.
Is there a built-in way on a Mac?
No. Mac has nothing built in for this, and the closest things get in the way:
- Preview: select the text (Cmd+A on a page), copy, and paste into Pages or Word. Formatting is lost and column layouts arrive jumbled.
- If Word for Mac is installed, File → Open the PDF; Word converts it into an editable document, best on simple text pages.
What that means
- No built-in converter in macOS; Pages cannot open PDFs.
- Copy and paste keeps words, not structure.
- Word's converter needs a Microsoft 365 licence and reflows complex layouts.
Do it in the browser instead
The same PDF to Word tool as the main page, running in Safari or Chrome on a Mac. Nothing is installed and the file is processed on your device.
